My First Time Planting and Growing Seeds of Jade Vine
Starting to cultivate Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) from five seeds was an incredible experience for me. The idea of growing a plant with stunning turquoise-blue flowers that are native to the tropical forests of the Philippines was both exciting and a bit scary. This is my story of transforming these little seeds into a breathtaking natural spectacle.
Discovering the Jade Vine: I was fascinated by this peculiar plant, known locally as tayabak. Its reputation for gorgeous, cascading turquoise-blue flowers attracted my interest. I was very excited to have these exquisite blooms in my own backyard.
The First Moves:
Soaking the Seeds: I soaked the seeds for an entire day to soften their hard outer shells and initiate the germination process.
Choosing the Right Soil: I filled each pot with a well-draining, organically rich soil mix that ranged in pH from slightly acidic to neutral to mimic the plant's natural habitat.
With great care, I buried each seed about an inch into the earth to make sure it had all the necessary conditions to sprout.
Waiting Patiently for Germination: I needed patience for this. I kept watering the soil and keeping an eye on things, wondering now and again if anything would happen. A few weeks later, little green shoots emerged.
Successes and Challenges:
The Waiting Game: After having to exercise patience to wait for germination and early development, it was gratifying to see the first shoots appear.
Protection from the Cold: I was careful to shield my fragile tropical plants from sudden frost or chilly breezes.
Creating a Humid Haven: I misted them frequently to maintain a high humidity level and simulate their native environment.
The Principal Display:
The day had finally come for my jade vine to begin to flower. Witnessing the magnificent display of blue blooms was stunning. It seemed like a piece of the Philippine forest had gotten into my grass.
Growing Jade Vine from seed was an experience that demanded a lot of information, tenacity, and ultimately, a great deal of satisfaction. It was a life-changing event that I will always cherish and one that reminded me of the majesty and persistence of the plant kingdom.
