In a series of tests, Dean Burn and Mark Woods of the National Cancer Institute (Dean translated parts of Warburg's speeches) evaluated the fermentation rate of tumors that formed at different rates decades ago. The findings validated Dr. Warburg's idea.

The tumors with the highest rates of growth also had the highest rates of fermentation. The slower a tumor grew, the less it relied on fermentation for energy production.

Obviously, Warburg's hypothesis regarding oxygen and cancer was contested and examined by various scientists.

Some researchers asserted that his idea was invalid after measuring a slow-growing tumour and discovering no fermentation. And if cancer could grow without fermentation, lack of oxygen respiration or fermentation could not be the cause of cancer. Dean Burn and Mark Woods examined the outcomes.

Using more modern technology, they discovered that the equipment these researchers used to evaluate fermentation levels was insufficiently precise to detect low levels of fermentation. Kizer of Gungnir Research in Portsmith, Ohio, explains, "Since Warburg's discovery, this difference in respiration has remained the most fundamental (and, according to some, the sole) constant physiological difference between normal and cancer cells. Using cell culture experiments, I chose to compare the responses of normal and cancer cells to oxygen environment alterations.

"The results I discovered were quite surprising. I observed..." 95 percent of cancer tissue was extremely hazardous to high 02 concentrations, whereas normal tissue was often not damaged by high oxygen concentrations. In fact, it was discovered that some normal tissues require high O2 pressures.
