4x8 Herb Perennial: Sage center, thyme edge creep, oregano spread
For a 4x8 foot herb bed featuring perennial sage in the center, thyme along the edges to creep, and oregano to spread, start by ensuring your bed gets at least 6 hours of sun and has well-drained soil. Lay out your plan before planting: place a single sage plant in the center of the bed, as sage tends to grow into a medium-sized shrub (up to 2-3 feet wide and tall). This gives it plenty of space and prevents overcrowding.

Next, plant thyme along the entire border of your bed. Space thyme plants 8-12 inches apart; varieties like creeping thyme or woolly thyme are perfect for edges, as they spill over and soften the border. You’ll need about 10-12 thyme starts for the perimeter, depending on spacing and variety. Thyme tolerates a bit of dryness and can handle some foot traffic, making it ideal for the edge.
In the remaining space between the central sage and the thyme border, plant oregano. Greek or Italian oregano are both vigorous spreaders, so leave at least 12-18 inches between each plant, and don’t crowd them too close to the sage. Typically, 4-6 oregano plants will fill the area nicely, depending on variety and how dense you want the coverage. Oregano will spread over time, so give it room to expand.
As your herbs grow, prune sage in early spring to encourage bushiness and harvest leaves regularly. Trim thyme after it flowers to keep it from getting woody and to encourage more creeping. Oregano can be cut back throughout the season to prevent it from getting leggy and to promote new growth.
A few extra tips: avoid overhead watering to reduce disease, especially for sage. Water in the morning at the base. Rotate harvesting spots to avoid stressing any single plant. If you want more color, tuck in a few chive or lavender plants, but don’t overcrowd. Over time, thyme will spill over the edges, oregano will fill the middle ground, and sage will anchor the center, making for a productive and attractive perennial herb bed.
