Butterfly Pea Tea Color Change — Fix Weak Blue Tea Fast
You expect butterfly pea flower tea to turn from bold blue to vibrant purple when lemon hits, but instead you get a pale, watery drink that barely changes. It’s frustrating when dried butterfly pea flowers can cost $8–$15 a bag and your “aesthetic tea moment” ends up looking like lightly tinted sink water.
- Step 1: Use 1–2 teaspoons of dried butterfly pea flowers per 8 oz cup of hot water, or 2–3 teaspoons if making iced tea because ice will dilute the color.
- Step 2: Heat water to 190–205°F and pour it directly over the flowers. Steep for 5–10 minutes until the tea turns a deep blue instead of a weak pale tint.
- Step 3: For a smoother flavor, add honey or simple syrup after steeping, starting with 1 teaspoon per cup. For iced tea, chill for 10–15 minutes before pouring over 1 cup of ice.
- Step 4: Add lemon only after the tea is fully steeped and strained. Adding lemon too early can make the color shift happen before you capture the dramatic blue-to-purple moment.
- Step 5: You’ll know it’s working when the tea is bold blue before lemon, then shifts to purple within seconds after adding 1–2 teaspoons of lemon juice.
The Result
They’ll make a stronger butterfly pea flower tea in 5–10 minutes with a bold blue base and a visible blue-to-purple lemon color change within seconds.
