Drip Line Setup: Timer soaker hoses save water

Combining a soaker hose with an automatic timer creates a highly efficient, water-saving irrigation system for garden beds and foundation plantings. This setup delivers water directly to the soil at the base of your plants, minimizing evaporation and preventing water waste from runoff or wind drift. The timer ensures a consistent watering schedule, preventing both overwatering and underwatering, which promotes healthier, more resilient plants.

To begin, gather your components. You will need a soaker hose of the appropriate length for your garden area, a digital or mechanical water timer, a backflow preventer, and a pressure regulator. The backflow preventer is a critical safety device that stops garden water from siphoning back into your home's water supply. The pressure regulator is essential for soaker hoses; it reduces your home's water pressure to a low, steady level (typically 10-25 PSI) that allows the hose to weep or drip slowly as intended, rather than spraying or bursting. You may also need a short, standard garden hose to act as a leader from the spigot to the garden bed, as well as garden staples to secure the soaker hose in place.

Installation starts at the outdoor spigot. First, screw the backflow preventer directly onto the spigot. Next, attach the water timer to the backflow preventer. Then, connect the pressure regulator to the outlet of the timer. This specific order is important for proper function. From the pressure regulator, connect your leader hose if needed, or attach the soaker hose directly.

Lay the soaker hose throughout your garden bed. Weave it back and forth, snaking it around the plants. Aim to place the hose within a few inches of the base of each plant to deliver water directly to the root zone. Avoid sharp bends or kinks, which can restrict water flow. Use garden staples every few feet to pin the hose to the soil, preventing it from moving. Once the hose is positioned, make sure the end cap is securely fastened on the far end of the hose. Covering the soaker hose with a two-inch layer of mulch will further reduce evaporation and protect the hose material from sun damage.

Finally, program your timer. The most effective time to water is in the early morning, between
