Flax seed gel hair styling natural curly - Plant hold no chemicals CG method
Crafting your own flax seed gel is a cornerstone for achieving defined, resilient natural curls within the Curly Girl (CG) method, relying purely on plant-based hold without synthetic chemicals. This natural gel provides excellent curl clump formation, frizz control, and a flexible yet firm cast that protects your curl pattern as it dries.

To begin, the process of making the gel itself is straightforward. You will need about 1/4 cup of whole flax seeds for every 2 cups of filtered water. Combine these in a small saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for approximately 7-10 minutes. The liquid will gradually thicken and take on a gel-like consistency. A good indicator is when the mixture coats the back of a spoon and leaves a trail when you run your finger through it, or when small white foam appears on the surface. Be careful not to overcook, as it can become too thick and difficult to strain. Undercooking, conversely, will result in a watery gel with insufficient hold.
Once the desired consistency is reached, remove the pan from the heat immediately. This is the crucial moment for straining. While the mixture is still hot, but not scalding, carefully pour it through a fine-mesh sieve, a nut milk bag, or even a clean nylon stocking (pantyhose) into a clean, heat-proof container. The hotter it is, the easier it will strain. If it cools too much, it becomes very difficult to push through. Do not press or squeeze the seeds too vigorously, as this can force tiny seed particles into your gel, which might create flakes in your hair. Allow the strained gel to cool completely to room temperature before use. Once cooled, it should have a smooth, slippery, viscous texture. Store the gel in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where it typically lasts for 1-2 weeks. For longer preservation, you can add a few drops of a natural preservative like grapefruit seed extract or a small amount of vitamin E oil, though this is optional for short-term use. Freezing portions in an ice cube tray is also an excellent option for extended shelf life; simply thaw a cube or two as needed.
Now, for application to your natural curls. The best time to apply flax seed gel is immediately after washing and conditioning your hair, while it is still soaking wet. The CG method emphasizes moisture, and applying gel to wet hair
