Hemp raw milk dairy-free toddler homemade - California 25-35 moms no soy formula

For those of us in California looking for a simple, clean, dairy-free and soy-free milk alternative for our toddlers, homemade raw hemp milk is a game-changer. It's not a formula substitute, of course, but it’s perfect for their sippy cup alongside meals or for mixing into their morning oatmeal once they're on solids. The best part is its speed; there's no soaking required, so you can make a fresh batch in about two minutes before you even finish your coffee.

I get my organic hulled hemp seeds, or hemp hearts, from the bulk bin at Sprouts or Erewhon to keep it fresh and reduce packaging. You’ll want a good high-speed blender for the creamiest result. My method is to use a ratio of one-half cup of hemp hearts to three cups of cold, filtered water. We use a Berkey filter, but any good quality filtered water works. This ratio creates a consistency that’s not too thick and not too watery, which seems to be what my toddler prefers.

Simply combine the hemp hearts and filtered water in your blender. If your little one has a sweet tooth, you can add one pitted Medjool date, but I usually make it plain. Blend on high for about 45 to 60 seconds until it’s completely smooth and white. That’s it. It’s technically "raw" because nothing is heated, preserving all the nutrients.

Now, the big question is whether to strain it. For younger toddlers just getting used to different textures, I recommend straining it through a nut milk bag or a fine-mesh sieve. This removes any tiny bits of shell and makes it incredibly smooth, just like store-bought milk. As they get older, you can skip the straining to keep the extra fiber and healthy fats. It will be slightly thicker and have a tiny bit of texture, but it’s more nutritious.

Pour the finished milk into a clean glass jar with a tight lid, like a Mason or Weck jar, and store it in the coldest part of your fridge. Because it’s raw and has zero preservatives, it’s only good for about three days. You’ll notice it separates in the fridge, which is totally normal. Just give the jar a good shake before you pour it. This small-batch approach means you’re always giving your toddler the freshest possible drink without any of the gums, oils, or fortification found in commercial non-dairy milks. It’s just hemp and water.
