How to start a windowsill herb garden in a small apartment

Starting a windowsill herb garden in a small apartment is easier than you might think, and it’s a great way to add freshness to your meals. First, pick herbs that thrive indoors, like basil, mint, chives, parsley, or thyme. These don’t need huge pots and adapt well to limited space.

Choose containers with drainage holes; shallow pots or repurposed jars work, as long as you add pebbles at the bottom for drainage. Fill them with a light potting mix rather than outdoor soil, which can be too dense. Place the pots on your sunniest windowsill—herbs need at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. If your apartment is a bit dim, supplement with a small LED grow light.

When planting, either start from seeds (which can take a couple of weeks to sprout) or buy small starter plants from a grocery or garden store. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry—don’t drown them, as herbs dislike soggy roots. If you notice yellow leaves, ease up on watering.

Trim herbs regularly, even if you’re not cooking with them, to encourage bushier growth. Snip just above a leaf node, and the plant will branch out. Rotate the pots every few days so all sides get sunlight. If your herbs look leggy or pale, they likely need more light.

Keep things simple: start with two or three types, and expand once you get comfortable. With a bit of attention, your windowsill garden will reward you with fresh flavor and a touch of greenery—even in the smallest apartment.
