Microgreen Shelf: LED indoor winter harvest

Setting up a dedicated microgreen shelf with LED lighting is the key to a continuous harvest throughout the winter. Start with a simple wire shelving unit, 48 inches wide by 18 inches deep, as the open wires promote crucial air circulation and make cleaning simple. For lighting, attach full-spectrum LED shop lights or T5 bar lights directly to the underside of each shelf using zip ties. Position two lights per shelf for even coverage. You will need a simple outlet timer to automate the light cycle, a critical step for consistent growth. Set it for 14 to 16 hours "on" and 8 to 10 hours "off." Plants need this dark period for respiration, and a common beginner mistake is leaving lights on 24/7, which can stress them. The distance between your lights and greens is also vital. Position the lights so they hang about 4 to 6 inches above the top of your growing medium. If you notice your microgreens are growing very tall, pale, and spindly ("leggy"), it's a clear sign the light source is too far away; lower the lights an inch. For trays, the 10-inch by 20-inch (1020) size is standard and fits four perfectly on a 48-inch shelf. To prevent messes and simplify watering, use a solid, no-holes tray as your bottom tray and nest a tray with drainage holes inside it. Fill the top tray with an inch of pre-moistened growing medium like coco coir. After seeding, stack the trays and place an empty tray on top with a small weight (like a brick or a couple of books) for 2 to 4 days. This "blackout period" encourages strong, uniform germination. Once they've sprouted, unstack them and place them under the lights. The most common failure point for beginners is improper watering, which leads to mold. Never mist or top-water your greens. Instead, practice bottom-watering by pouring about a cup of water into the solid bottom tray. The medium will wick up the moisture it needs. To check if they need water, simply lift a corner of the tray; if it feels very light, it's time to water. Finally, add a small clip-on fan to one of the shelf posts. Run it on low for a few hours daily to gently circulate air. This strengthens the stems and is your best defense against mold and damping-off disease.
