Pizza Bed: Oregano, peppers, basil circle
To create this themed garden, select a location that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily, as both peppers and basil require full sun to thrive. Oregano is more tolerant but will produce the most flavorful leaves in a sunny spot. Good drainage is crucial. Begin by marking out your circle. A simple method is to drive a stake into the center of your desired bed location, tie a string to it, and use the string as a compass to trace a circle on the ground with flour or sand. A diameter of four to six feet is manageable and provides enough space. Clear the circle of all grass and weeds, digging down a few inches to remove the root systems. Loosen the native soil within the circle with a garden fork and amend it heavily with compost and a small amount of sand if your soil is heavy clay. This creates a rich, well-draining medium that these Mediterranean plants prefer.

The layout is key to the "pizza" concept. Visually divide the circle into wedges, like slices of a pizza. You can use small, flat stones or even just imagined lines to separate the sections. Plant the peppers in the center of the circle, as they will grow the tallest and this placement prevents them from shading the shorter herbs. Choose a variety like bell peppers, banana peppers, or a compact jalapeño. Give each pepper plant about 18 inches of space from its neighbors.
Dedicate several of the surrounding "slices" to basil. Grouping the basil plants together makes harvesting easier. Space basil seedlings about 10-12 inches apart to allow them to become bushy.
Use the remaining slices for oregano, paying special attention to the outer edge of the circular bed. Oregano is a perennial spreader and will act as a beautiful, fragrant groundcover, softening the border of your bed and even spilling over the edge slightly. Plant oregano starts about 8-10 inches apart; they will fill in the space over the season.
After planting, water everything thoroughly at the base of the plants to
