Thoroughly wash the fresh leaves in cool, running water and pat them dry. The effectiveness of the final product hinges on the quality of this initial extract.

For a direct aqueous extraction, finely chop one part fresh Saluyot leaves and combine with two parts distilled water in a saucepan. Gently heat the mixture on a low setting for 15-20 minutes, ensuring it simmers but never reaches a rolling boil, which can degrade the delicate mucilage. The water will transform into a viscous, slippery gel. Strain this mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or multiple layers of cheesecloth, pressing the pulp to release all the liquid.
