French Sorrel Seeds (Rumex scutatus)

What you receive: 2 packets of 1,500 planting seeds each (3,000 seeds total). Seeds only; no live plant, fresh leaves, dried herb, or prepared tea is included.

French sorrel is a perennial leafy herb grown for tart, lemony leaves used in salads and cooking. This is Rumex scutatus, not garden sorrel (Rumex acetosa) or red-veined sorrel (Rumex sanguineus).

Planting and care

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Sow directly outdoors or start indoors around three weeks before the last expected frost. Follow packet sowing-depth instructions; keep the seedbed moist during establishment. Water established plants as needed, remove flowering stalks for continued leaf production, and harvest tender young leaves. Containers with drainage holes are suitable. Actual germination and growth vary.

French sorrel vs. garden sorrel

Common names vary, so check the botanical name. This packet is labeled Rumex scutatus; common garden sorrel is generally Rumex acetosa.

Food safety: Sorrel leaves contain oxalic acid and should not be eaten in large amounts. The seeds sold here are for planting, not direct consumption.

Growing references: Royal Horticultural Society and Toronto Master Gardeners.
